Asking the Right Questions for Project Success

Most of us have played the game 20Questions at some time or the other. I 20080109_webdevelopmentmetoam still fascinated at how just by asking a set of 20 questions you can read other person’s mind (or get close to it). The trick obviously lies in asking the right set of questions.

Having been part of the web design industry for years now we can confidently state that the single most important requirement for completing a web development project successfully is asking the right set of questions. At Vinfotech we call it the first “D” or the Define Phase of Project Development life cycle. Most of the time projects fail because of unclear goals and objectives. Web Designers feel that clients are vague in defining their objectives, however the real reason is that the customers are not always sure what are the things to answer and how to put it in front of their vendor. *

Web Design, though, is considered more of an art than science, there can be some rules which when applied well gives you a higher chance of success.

We have tried to frame a set of questions that can be used by Web Design companies to get a better idea of Customer Requirement. These questions have been put in a very simple language for clients to find it easy to answer.

Ofcourse, this is not written in stone and should keep evolving based on your experience with your customers. Some of the questions would also change based on the specific nature of requirement. Also remember, this is just the beginning of Interaction and it always has to be followed up with more specific questions.

As a good web design company you will have to take deliberate care to ensure that you not just understand your client’s vision, but also try to make them understand the true potential they can reach. This would be the first step in you helping your customers achieve their dreams.

In our future blogs we will talk more about Effective Project Management for Web 2.0 Sites and how can a good development methodology create a stable, ongoing family of great clients
